about us

 Our Philosophy

In order to thrive in the modern world, San Carlos Charter educators and staff believe a learner must be prepared to understand and solve complex problems. As a staff and community, we foster a school environment in which our learners can develop the following characteristics in order to be better prepared for the future:

  • Social and Emotional Competency: Learners must be able to navigate social situations, both professionally and personally. At SCC, we strive to empower our learners to lead with influence, rather than control. They must be able to utilize social and emotional awareness to effectively collaborate with others.

  • Analytical and Critical Thinking: Learners must be curious about the changing world around them. They will encounter issues that they must be able to tackle with creativity and innovation. As they work to solve problems, they will encounter new information and changing variables that they must respond to with agility and ease.

  • Creative Problem-Solving: Learners must be forward-thinking to meet the ever-changing needs of society in the future. They must anticipate the needs of their communities and develop innovative solutions to solve the world’s pressing problems. They must take initiative and pursue their interests with a passionate sense of urgency.

    Interdisciplinary Instruction

Our curriculum is centered on a challenging, project-based approach that embraces the individual passions and diversity of our learners and educators. Students learn through direct experience, practical work, storytelling and exploration-based programs.

An 8th grade graduate of SCC is a curious learner and critical thinker, connected and collaborative, an advocate for themselves and others, self-aware and resilient.

    Multi-Age Classrooms

To ensure an intimate school experience, we have a two-grade range in all of our classrooms (K/1, 2/3, 4/5, 6/7) except for 8th grade. This design allows us to change a child’s peer group from year to year, enabling them to experience being a younger learner and an older learner. It also creates stability for our learners, allowing them to develop deep relationships with educators, and for our educators to maximize learning time in the classroom by better observing unique needs of students and developing their individual learning styles.

    Educator Created Curriculum

Our educators are trusted as experts and encouraged to take risks. They artfully adapt and flex their lessons to a changing world and the unique energy of their classrooms, keeping learning fresh and relevant. At all levels, educators stretch the bounds of learning with new techniques while balancing traditional methods. Our multiage classrooms enable educators to teach and use materials multidimensionally with learners, re-exploring concepts from multiple angles and creating endless opportunities for development.
